What's Been Happening in Year 5
After an unexpected extended holiday for the children it was lovely to have all of the Y5 children back in school last Tuesday and get back to normal.
We have, as ever, had a busy time over the last week and, as you will read, the next 2 weeks are looking to be just as jam packed with exciting activities.
Last week cannot go by without mentioning the sad departure of the fabulous Mrs Biggins. Some of the Y5 children had been lucky enough to have Mrs Biggins be their EA in Y2, Y3 and Y5 and all of the children will miss her enormously. The whole school surprised Mrs Biggins at the end of snack time with a ‘Flash Mob’ of several dances choreographed by Mrs Biggins over the last few Y3 and Y5 shows. Y5 then went on to dress up as their favourite Disney / Pixar or Dreamworks character and share a tasty shared lunch before saying goodbye at the end of the day. Mrs Biggins has been replaced by the equally lovely Mrs Barnett. Mrs Barnett is quickly getting to know the children as she works in the classrooms alongside us and she is a fantastic addition to our wonderful Year 5 team.
Since getting back to school the children have been involved in writing recounts for their Big Award for Writing and carrying out assessments of their maths learning. These will go towards helping the children decide on their targets in these areas for the next term. We will then be continuing in maths with our work on fractions, moving on to decimals and percentages, as well as learning about area and perimeter. In writing we will be looking at the features of a newspaper report. Cosmic continues to be our class reader and the children are always keen to find out what will happen to Liam next. Ask them about the story if you want to know more!
In our Space Race unit the children have moved from constellations and navigation to thinking about exploration and the concepts related to this. They have been busy creating fabulous pieces of Art using collage and different paint techniques. Next week we will have the opportunity to visit the Discovery Dome which will be set up in the Globe. This will give the children the opportunity to see visual images of Space up close.
On Tuesday after school this week we met, as a team, with Treasure Island Group and that same evening it was great to see so many of you at their presentation. The Y5 camp is a fantastic opportunity for your child to foster friendships, build their resilience and independence skills, challenge themselves and in many cases try out new activities. We hope that this presentation was useful and informative. The presentation will be made available on the parent portal later this week for your reference and for anyone who could not make Tuesday evening.
As you are already aware our Y5 open morning has been rescheduled for next Tuesday morning from 8 - 8.45 and we look forward to welcoming you into our classrooms so that your child can share their work and learning with you. This is a great opportunity to spend some quality time with your child finding out about all of the things they have been doing in school this year.
Finally, this Saturday is the annual DBIS food fair. All of the children have been working with Mrs Draper to create a huge year group Samba Band and are excited to be performing at the fair from 1.30. Having heard them practice you are in for a real treat and hope to see lots of you there dancing to the Y5 Samba beat!
