What's Been Happening in Year 5

Primary Year 5

Year 5 have had a busy start to the year, getting used to new faces, teachers, classrooms and routines.

It is lovely to see such positive, happy faces in our classrooms. There have been several new additions to the year group and it’s been great to see how quickly they have settled in and how helpful their new classmates have been towards them.

We spent last week learning about how we learn and had some fantastic discussions about mindset which will help the children with their further achievements and learning. The children also got together as a whole year group and worked on their collaboration and communication skills.

Specialist lessons began for Year 5 last week and the children have enjoyed getting back into the routine of our timetables. A reminder that, now the children are in Year 5, they are expected to change after PE lessons into their uniform. It is also really important that all of the uniform items and water bottles are clearly labelled to avoid items going missing.

Our unit of ‘Our Hong Kong’ began this week. Please see the termly overview on the Parent Portal which will tell you about the different concepts we will be covering. If anyone has any specialist knowledge about the history of Hong Kong or interesting information/photos to share with the children then please let Mrs Ashcroft know as we are always on the lookout for a wide range of sources to extend the children’s knowledge and understanding.

In writing we have been looking at the features of a Non-Chronological report so that we can write our own about Hong Kong and in maths we have been revising place value and negative numbers.

Parent/Teacher conferences have taken place this week. It was great to have the opportunity chat with you about your child’s first few weeks in Year 5 and share relevant information. If you were unable to meet this week then please contact your child’s teacher and arrange another time.
