What's Been Happening in Year 1

Primary Year 1

Wow! What a busy few weeks we have had in Year 1!

We have now started our specialist lessons and have really enjoyed getting to know our new teachers. We’ve started our Music, Learning Technologies, Mandarin, PE, Swimming and RWI lessons, and have really enjoyed learning about lots of different things. In our classrooms, we have continued to work on our Learning to Learn topic and have been looking at what it means to have a Growth Mindset. Our teachers have explained to us that it’s okay to make mistakes and that learning is a process. We’ve looked at stories and videos (Poppy from Trolls!) and thought about how these characters have not given up when faced with a challenge. We have created our bodies in either play dough, construction materials or by drawing them, and we are going to complete the task three times to see how we can improve. We’ve talked about giving feedback to our friends to support them in their learning. We can’t wait to see how much we have progressed by the end of the challenge!!

In our Maths lessons we have been looking at numbers to 20. We have completed a range of challenges from practising our number formation, matching numbers to words and completing missing number patterns. We’ve really enjoyed using the iPads to practise our number work independently. We have also liked working with our friends to solve any problems that we might encounter!

We’ve also started Buddy Time with our Year 6 classes. Some of us have new buddies this year and we’ve really enjoyed playing with our Year 6 friends and completing tasks with them. We’re very excited to spend more time this year with our buddies.

This week we begin Guided Reading sessions and will start taking reading books home. We’re really looking forwards to sharing our reading with our families and talking about the books we have read.

Next week (13th September 2017) is Roald Dahl Day. We can’t wait to dress up as our favourite Roald Dahl character and raise money for our school library and local book charity. Please see the portal for more information on this.

We’ll soon be starting our Talk for Writing lessons and retelling instructions on How to Wash our Hands. This will definitely help us with the Green Council’s new initiative to help us use less paper towels. Remember to ‘Shake and Fold’ when using paper towels. We could even begin to practise at home (but with a towel of course!).

Have a great week!
