Paula McQuillan
In Food Tech students are currently applying the knowledge, skills and understanding they have developed over focussed practical tasks (FPTs) and product evaluations last term to design and make a salad wrap (Y7), nutritious snack (Y8) or healthy meal (Y9). Year 7 have recently trialled their designs and are now ready to conduct a nutritional analysis of their salad wrap product. They will be making their final design shortly. Year 8 has completed their design and make assignment and produced some fabulous healthy snacks (see the photos below). They have recently started work on their new 'Desserts' unit. Year 9 have also recently made their final product and were very fortunate to have a guest chef, Tom Burney visit to help judge the best design (see photos below). Parents will soon receive a permission letter regarding an article being published about this competition in DBLiving magazine.

In Year 7, as part of the ‘Healthy Eating’ unit, students will be learning some basic skills for preparing and cooking a variety of foods as well as how to work safely and hygienically in the kitchen. Over the unit they will also learn about the importance of nutrition and healthy eating as well as designing, making and evaluating food products. The unit will culminate with a design and make project where students will design and make a tasty and nutritious pita or tortilla wrap that could be sold in the school café. Students will also test and evaluate their finished product.
In Year 8, as part of the ‘Snacks’ unit, students will be learning about food safety and hygiene in the food industry and are moving on to investigating the nutritional content of some snack food products, as well as considering the nutritional requirements of active children and whether many snacks on the market address these requirements. They will learn about the functionality of food ingredients in baked products and develop skills for altering recipes for health. The unit will culminate in a design and make project where students will design and make a new snack-type baked product. Students will also test and evaluate their finished product.
In Year 9, as part of the ‘Designing Dinners’ unit, students will re-visit safety and hygiene practices for food handling and will then move onto learning some useful and more challenging food preparation skills for preparing nutritious meals as they explore a variety of different international cuisines. Students will also investigate ready-made and fast food meals, as well as take a closer look at ingredients and the basis of concerns about biodiversity, GM crops and the use of chemicals in production of foods. The unit will culminate with an opportunity for students to apply the skills they have learnt, to design and make a nutritious ‘ready-meal’.
