END OF TERM 2 SPORTS UPDATE
On behalf of the PE department, thank you to all of the students and coaches for your superb work this term. We have had well over 20 fixtures and tournaments, winning some fantastic titles long the way, and most importantly representing DBIS with pride and good spirit that we have become known for around Hong Kong.
Term 3 sees us move into more FOBISSEA trainings as our athletes prepare for the upcoming games in Suzhou (U13) and Beijing (primary). The term 3 training timetable is linked below.
DBIS Sports Round Up
What a wonderful and hectic start we have had to the 2012 sporting year! Congratulations to all competitors, coaches and parents for your hard work and parochial support on the sidelines. Keep up the fantastic work!
PRIMARY SPORT
Primary Y4 - 6 FOBISSEA Games – Harrow School, Beijing, June 6 - 9: Congratulations to the many students who have turned out to trial for the Games. The trials have come to an end with over 70 young athletes taking part. With only 36 spots available on the roster, the selectors have had their work cut out! We are confident we have an amazing team to represent DBIS and bring home some debut silverware.
Shaheen Hockey Tournament - Under 8 Champions!: It was a cold, grey day but the U8 team quickly warmed up and played with strength to win their match 2-0 against KCC, the team that beat us in the final at the last tournament. Matthew Frank was player of the match in this first game. Our DBIS team continued our successful streak in the next two games against JIS and PLK, winning 3-0 in both games. Odhran Neville was player of the match against JIS and Clarissa Jackson was player of the match against PLK. The biggest challenge was in our fourth match against GSIS, and it was a nail biting game from start to finish. The teams were equally matched and played a most challenging game with skill and determination. The game resulted in an amazing 3-3 draw. Our final match against AKAL resulted in a 2-0 win for DBIS assuring us a place in the cup final.
Cup Final: DBIS vs. HKFC: The cup final was a tense and nerve wracking match, especially as HKFC had a strong defensive line. DBIS conceded a first goal and while the majority of the play was based in the HKFC half, their defence kept knocking all of our goal attempts back (six in total!). It wasn’t until the last four minutes of the game when our team managed to score their first goal that the tides turned. The atmosphere changed amid cheers and shouts and DBIS knocked in two more rapid goals to be assured a win of 3-1! DBIS were declared champions of the U8 Shaheen tournament and collected the prize cup. Huge congratulations to the DBIS U8 hockey team! Superb team work and communication were the strengths of the team and they are already looking forward to their next tournament! Miss Lochrie and Mrs Roxborough
Under 10: The U10 hockey team had five tough games but kept their spirits up and improved their play with each game. Out of the five games we had two wins, with some strong attack from our forward players. Toby Wyatt was kept busy in goal and did a great job defending with Amber and Nyrobi. Our forward players began to link together more as the tournament went on and some good passing and strong hits resulted in a couple of exciting wins. Miss Kavanagh and Mrs O’Connell
Under 12 - U12 A Winner of the Plate: Our player of the day for outstanding play and leadership - Tiarnan Neville. Two U12 teams represented DBIS. We competed in 2 sections against other club sides from HKFC, Valley, Shaheen, KCC, Khalsa, PLK, GSIS and HK Sikh. We played 7a side with a squad of 9 players in each team. Both teams played five, twelve minute games in the first round. The A team were runners up in their section and went on to play for the plate which they won 1-0 against KCC. The B team did not qualify in their section but played with spirit and determination throughout the morning. Mrs Young
DBIS Beach Touch Tournament – Boys Champions!: This was our third year hosting the ever popular DBIS Beach Touch Tournament. With 18 teams involved, the day again showcased some of the great touch rugby talent we have in Hong Kong.
DBIS Girls: With some of the Year 5 players missing due to their show commitments, our Year 6 girls pulled together to play some fantastic touch, going through their pool play unbeaten losing to the eventual winners, Chinese International School 1-2.
DBIS Boys: For the third year running, our boys remained unbeaten and won the title. The team looked a step ahead of all of their opponents, scoring 31 tries and conceding only 2. Congratulations to the boys and their coaches, Mr Tait and Mr Metcalfe.
RCHK Basketball Competition: Two DBIS Year 6 mixed basketball teams attended an international school tournament at RCHK on Wednesday with some mixed results. The B team showed some good determination but were outplayed by very skilful schools in their pool. The A team had a very tough pool so had to perform every game. The team started slowly, but gelled as the morning wore on, with some great defence and shooting getting them through to the semi finals. A 12-0 win over Discovery College was the highlight of a solid morning’s work. The team gained an impressive third place finish. Adrian Doneux was rewarded for his great play and shooting by making the ‘All Stars’ tournament team.
HLYIS Primary Athletics Meet: Congratulations to Mr O’Connell and his team of students who competed in the first Inter Primary athletics event of the year. By all accounts, it was a successful day with our team placing 5th out of 15 schools.
SECONDARY SPORT
ISSFHK Basketball: Congratulations to all five DBIS Secondary Basketball teams for your fantastic efforts this season. Having Coach JJ joining the programme, our teams have progressed a great deal, with four teams going through to the playoffs this year. The popularity of basketball in our school is increasing every year with the addition of the ISSFHK competition, along with the basketball element of the FOBISSEA Games. Thanks must go to all of the parents who have assisted with travel arrangements and for your general support this season.
Under 13 FOBISSEA Games Team: The team continues to train hard up to four times a week. With various athletics meets coming up, as well as trials within the team, the competition is alive and kicking! 18 students will travel to Suzhou in May to compete in our first ever Under 13 FOBISSEA Games competition.
HKNA Junior Netball League: Our U19 Netball Squad played their first two league games on Sunday 12 and 19of February. They have got off to a flying start with a 30-8 win over WIS “Wisanators” in the first round of the Development Plate Competition. They met the league leaders HKFC “Meteors” and put in an awesome performance. They lost 27-34, a high score against a club team. Next up, this Sunday the DBIS “Hammerheads” face the AISHK “Kookaburras” for what looks to be another exciting clash! Congratulations to our girls for a fantastic start to the netball season. Kelsey Bredbury (Captain), Natasha Christensen, Giulia Andraguetti, Mo Suwanwela, Renee Orleans, Apple Obenario, Jo Griffith, Chloe Small, Elisa Klophaus, Meg Bradley and Jasmine Nuttall.
U13 HKSSF Netball:Yes - we have a year 8 team! The girls played in their first teaching tournament as a team and were looking good! On Monday 20 February Chanel Niven (Captain), Jamie Carter, Giada Terzi, Nada Menhem, Maddison Bryant, Nadia Morrison and Shanelle Cadis battled without substitutes against seven Hong Kong schools. This tournament was non-scoring and the team often won on possession, if not goals. Congratulations to this team! Thanks also to Mr Niven and Mr Bryant for travelling with us on Monday and to Mrs Bryant for her help at training. Year 8 girls, your team needs you. Come and join training on a Tuesday morning at 7:00 am. There are two more tournaments, on 12 March and 23 April 23. Miss Chambers
