Enrichment Studies

Exciting extension and enrichment opportunities for our Primary School students.

This year will see the expansion of our current Enrichment Studies programme, with the provision of a full time teacher.  Our Enrichment Studies teacher has extensive knowledge and experience in the provision of enrichment studies programmes of work.

All Years 3 - 6 students will participate in at least one enrichment modules during the school year, we also hope to extend enrichment opportunities to our Year 1 and Year 2 classes.  Each enrichment module will run for up to one full school week. There will be up to 24 students taking part in each enrichment module. The students will volunteer, be identified or selected to be part of an enrichment module. We endeavour to keep the same age group together during these respective enrichment modules. It is important to note that if it was a Year 3 enrichment module, the students would come from all four Year 3 classes to make up the enrichment module group of 24.

When students are taking part in an enrichment module, they will not undertake their usual classroom work for that week. It is intended that participating students will receive extended and focused learning time to work on projects, detailed investigations, developing the arts, extended enquiry in a fun and challenging environment.

Our aims are to provide our students with:

  • Extended time to work on areas of challenge and interest

  • Focus time on investigative and enquiry based learning

  • Cooperative learning situations

  • Increased creative learning through the arts

  • Project based and problem solving situations

It is also important to note that while we are seeking to further extend the learning experiences for and with our students, this is not a ‘gifted and talented programme’. Experience in such programmes has shown that it is often far too young to isolate ‘gifted and talented’ students. The criteria used to identify such students can be very restrictive. In particular, and through experience, we have found that all students are gifted and talented in various endeavours. Therefore we want to be able to present exciting extension and enrichment opportunities for all of our Primary School students.

Our enrichment studies teacher will be taking the majority of the enrichment modules, however other teachers will be volunteering to take week long modules as well. When this occurs, our enrichment studies teacher will be teaching in that teacher’s class – maintaining and building on the curriculum based teaching and learning already in place.

Some of the upcoming enrichment studies modules include:

  • A creative writer’s workshop

  • Choral development / drama / dance

  • Simulated problem solving through information and communication technologies

  • Movie making

  • Investigation in science

  • Mathematics problem solving

  • Orienteering

  • Leadership

  • Extended art works

The opportunities are huge and the options are endless. We want to make our Enrichment Studies Programme a wonderful learning voyage of discovery for our students.  We have the undoubted teaching talents and we most certainly have students who are thoughtful and proven learners.
