Dear Parents
Fun – Family - Food
Food Stalls: The Food Coordinators are having their first meeting on Monday 10 October at 9:00 am in the library located in our Primary and Secondary School Discovery Centre.
The Committee ask that at least one representative from each volunteer country attend this important meeting. Please contact Kylie Wilson on 6259 6460 or Tina Leamon on 9132 5249 if you require further information.
Commercial Stalls: This year we have had an overwhelming response by vendors for our Commercial Stalls, situated in the Globe Theatre. There are still a few spaces available, so please contact Alison at for more information.
Advisory Committee: Members of the current school Advisory Committee met for their last time on Monday. The new Advisory Committee will be determined at the end of this month and will gather for the first of their meetings in November. Please read the attached information on the Establishment of the School Advisory Committee if you wish to put you name forward as a parent volunteer.
Thank you to our current parent volunteers: Kylie Wilson, Birgitte Christensen, Richard Bryant, Martin Wardle and Julian Wyatt. Thank you once again to Jennifer Lee in your role as liaison person with City Management. Thank you also to Tracey Smal and our Senior Leadership Team for your work on our Advisory Committee. The collective and considered input throughout another busy year by our Advisory Committee is hugely appreciated in developing our school to benefit all students.
A very special thank you to Julian Wyatt for your ten years of service on our Advisory Committee. Julian will be standing down in this role but will continue to be a full member of our DBIS School Council. Thank you to Julian and Alison for setting aside so much time for our school. We are all so grateful for your work for our students and staff. The changes to our school in the past ten years have been immense and your participation in this process has been one of the ‘success keys’.
Diwali: As part of our Diwali celebrations, we are inviting all Primary and Secondary students to dress in traditional Indian costume on Friday 28 October. We are sending out this notice so that you have time to organise a costume. This is an optional dress up day for students and staff. Kindergarten will be holding their Diwali celebrations earlier on Wednesday 26 October.
Diwali is the festival of light for Hindus and Sikhs across the world. It is an important time as it celebrates new and happy beginnings for the coming year. We hope your child enjoys being part of this festival and we thank you for your support.
Year 1 Reading and Writing Evening: Thank you to all the parents who attended the very successful Year 1 evening on Wednesday 28 September. It was a pleasure to see so many of you there. Thank you also to our Year 1 staff for your work preparing for the evening and for your presentations on the night.
Mid Term Break: Our Mid Term break is coming up soon. Our Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary Schools will close on Friday 14 October at their usual times. All classes will start again for the second stage of Term One, again at their usual times, on Monday 24 October.
Tonight is the Reception Curriculum Workshop evening at 7:00 pm. Our Reception teachers are looking forward to sharing the content of our RWI, Numeracy and International Primary Curriculum programmes with you.
The Kindergarten Library will be closed tomorrow as work begins on our fantastic wall mural. This is being painted for us by Louise Ryan, yet another of our talented DBIS parents. Although the library is closed all day tomorrow, it will be open again on Monday morning. Louise will continue to work throughout next week and our students will have the pleasure of watching as the mural takes shape on our walls. It is a very exciting project and we are very grateful to Louise, her artistic talents and the time she has so generously given to paint the mural.
Next Wednesday and Thursday are our Nursery Open Class evenings. Information regarding the format has been sent to all Nursery parents so please be sure to email your attendance to for the attention of Angel Tang. We look forward to seeing as many of you there, as possible. Thank you - Jane Hendley Head of Kindergarten.
Learning to Learn: Laura Beaumont, our geography and history teacher, provided parents with an insight into the "Learning to Learn" initiative underway in our Secondary School. Thank you to all of the parents who were present at this very well attended event. It was also a valuable opportunity for parents to meet with our Secondary School staff.
Year 10 Parent Teacher Conferences: Part two of the Year 10 parent teacher conferences has been rescheduled due to the postponement caused by the recent typhoon. The new date is Thursday 13 October.
STOMP! for Year 8 Students: Mr Bradley will be leading a student trip on Friday 28 October to see the internationally acclaimed production of STOMP!

Medical Room Update: Our health and medical coordinators are busy preparing for the upcoming Year 1 and Year 6 immunisations. To assist families in preparing, our staff have added two useful booklets to the parents information section of our school website. These outline the immunisation process and contain some helpful tips on how to make the immunisation process as comfortable as possible. To access these booklets please go to the following link on our school website: http://www.dbis.edu.hk/about_our_school/parent_information/medical_forms_and_information/
From time to time students may contract head lice. Should this occur, immediate treatment is necessary. As a school, we send out notification to classes if cases of head lice exist. We have recently been made aware of a safe and effective head lice treatment product – please follow this link to find out more: http://www.theneemteam.co.uk/acatalog/Head_lice.html
Secondary Sport
DBIS Swim Team: The members of the DBIS Secondary Swim Team have been training hard over the last six weeks, working on the technical aspects of their strokes. Five members of the squad have represented the school at three swim meets this season at the Australian School, Canadian School, and this week at the German Swiss School. The success of the team has been fantastic, and has resulted in a range of top three finishes across a variety of events and relays. Congratulations to Athina Zodl, Victoria Lawrence, Cooper Murphy, Giulia Andraghetti, and Natasha Christensen for your efforts. Mr Corbett will be taking a larger team to the next event at HKIS, with all members swimming for places in the ISSFHK Swimming Championships.
DBIS X-Country Team: The Secondary X-Country Team has been training hard every Thursday morning under the guidance of Mr Corbett, Mrs Tyrrell, and Mrs Mak. We have a squad of around twenty five runners who train to compete in the weekly ISSFHK races. Some notable results so far included Athina Zodl (Year 7) beating fifty other runners to win the Under 12 girls section at the Aberdeen Country Park. Charlie Taylor (Year 7) also placed in the top ten. Our Under 16 team has also competed, with Alex Nardoni (Year 10) placing in the top 25. All runners are aiming to represent DBIS at the ISSFHK Championships.
Under 12 Girls Football: The side has played superbly to go through pool play unbeaten, with good wins over AiSHK, Discovery College, and Renaissance College on the way. The team will now move into the Championship round. We wish Mrs Boone, Miss Worthington and the girls the best of luck.
Under 12 Boys Football: With the girls setting the standard early, the boys have not let the bar slip. Under the guidance of their coach, Mr Reid, the team has also gone through the pool play undefeated. We also wish Mr Reid and the boys the best of luck in the coming weeks.
Under 14 Boys Football: Largely made up of inexperienced players, Mr Fryer has worked the team hard, resulting in week to week progressions during the competition. Dante Gutu and Ruben Brons have led the team wonderfully, the highlight so far being a fantastic game against YCIS. Good luck for your final game boys.
Secondary Basketball: Coach John Johnson, Head of Basketball for ESL Services, brings his experience to DBIS this year. Coach JJ will be managing all boys and girls teams this year, as the squads train towards the ISSFHK competition beginning in November. Training for boys is after school on Tuesdays, with the girls training on Fridays. Feel free to come and join in even if you have no experience or did not sign up at the registration day.
