Autumn update

Dear Parents

INTERNATIONAL FOOD FAIR

Please be sure to read the Food Fair Update and the Cake Stall notice sent out as attachments with this Newsletter.  Remember to keep Saturday 27 November clear for our school’s spectacular community event.

  Food Fair Update # 3

Nursery and Reception Parent Evenings:  Thank you to all of our Nursery and Reception parents who came along to the evenings held at our Kindergarten recently.  These evenings are most important to share the content and contexts of your child’s early years journey at school.  Our staff value your attendance at these evenings as we set up the vital home and school partnership enjoyed within our Discovery Bay International School community.

Thank you to all of our Kindergarten staff for your thorough preparation and delightfully presented evenings.

Secondary Swimming Gala:  We had a great day in every respect for our inaugural Secondary School Swimming Gala.  Of key importance was the very high participation and related performances of our students who had prepared strongly for their respective events.  Well done and thank you to our students for your efforts and achievements in the day.  Thank you to our most supportive parents who were able to make it along to the events – it was a difficult day in the heat.  Thank you also to our staff for your work at in all aspects of the events.  A very special thank you to Matt Corbett, Susanne Chambers, Jarrod Dunn and Sasha James for you superb preparation and clockwork organisation.

The size of this event is likely to require a bigger venue next year, where we will look to provide bus transport for our students, staff and parents.  We will keep you informed closer to the time.

Library Book Stall:  A reminder that we will be holding our popular book stall once again this year.  If you have any books that you would like to donate for the Library Book Stall, please bring them to the library at our Kindergarten or to our library on the first floor of the Discovery Centre at our Primary / Secondary School.

Diwali:  A reminder that as part of our Diwali celebrations, all students are welcome to dress in traditional Indian costume tomorrow, Friday 29 October.  Please note that it is ‘dress up’ only in a traditional Indian costume, and not a general dress up day.

While Diwali doesn’t start until a little later this year, our Primary School will have their traditional Diwali assembly on this Friday.  Please note that this is an optional dress up day for all students and staff.

Diwali is the festival of light for Hindus and Sikhs across the world.  It is an important time as it celebrates new and happy beginnings for the coming year.  We hope your child enjoys being part of this festival and we thank you for your support.

Advisory Committee:  Thank you to the parents who volunteered to be part of this year’s Advisory Committee.  Confirmation of our new Advisory Committee will be communicated next week.

Secondary School Building Update:  Following on from our major announcement in the last newsletter, work has started on our new Secondary School building.  The new building will include specialist teaching rooms for English, mathematics, geography, history and modern foreign languages.  We will have purpose built science laboratories, a music suite with practice rooms, an art room and a design technology room.  The Secondary School building will also have administration offices and a staffroom.  There will be a 25 metre swimming pool on the roof top which will be used by Primary and Secondary students – Primary students will access the pool via the Discovery Centre.  There will be changing rooms and shower facilities for our Secondary students.

A separate Secondary School Library and Study Centre will be opened where three of the existing Year 6 classes are currently located.  This Library and Study Centre will open up on to an outdoor green rooftop area.  Secondary students will also be able to access a food technology room being developed in the adjacent Discovery Centre.

Training Session with the All Blacks:  A substantial number of students from our Year 4 to Year 9 classes were able to attend a training session held by the All Blacks that took place earlier this week.  The very fortunate students (and staff) were able to observe the All Blacks in training and to mix with the players afterwards.  I understand that all concerned had a most enjoyable time.

I would like to pass our particular thanks on to Anton and Kim Whiley for spending so much time organising this opportunity, liaising on a number of occasions with Graham Henry, the senior coach of the All Blacks.  Thank you also to Matt Corbett for coordinating the event for our students.

Cooler Weather Uniform:  Cooler Weather Uniform items are now available in the Uniform Shop located on our Primary / Secondary School campus.  Please refer to our website for a full list of available uniform items.  Long sleeve polo shirts, fleeces, vests and trackpants will be arriving on 10 November.

LOST and FOUND:  The Lost and Found store room has been relocated to the outer corridor of the Globe Theatre. At present there are many long sleeved and sleeveless fleeces, long trousers and shirts that are not named, as well as assorted other clothing. There are also lots of water bottles and lunch boxes. It is great to see very few hats.

On Friday 5 November all items from the Lost and Found will be placed in the undercover area for the day. It is hoped that many of these items can be collected by their owners.  Unclaimed items will be donated to a charity in Hong Kong.

Please ensure that your child’s clothing, drink bottle, lunch box and other school equipment is clearly labeled with his or hers preferred name and class.
