Dear Parents
Enrolments for Year 7 – Starting in August 2012: In response to the high demand for spaces in our Year 7 classes, our School Council has revised the priority criteria for offering places to all applicants from our DBIS classes. The DBIS policy of offering places to students into Year 7 of our Secondary School is based on the following criteria, in order of priority:
• Principal’s discretion;
• Total time enrolled at DBIS (includes DBIS Kindergarten and DBIS Primary School);
• Brothers and sisters of students currently or previously enrolled in DBIS Secondary School;
• Date of application.
Please refer to the attached ‘DBIS Secondary School Enrolment – Year 7 Classes’, which has already been shared with parents of our current Year 5 students, for further information.
Our Secondary School building update: The diggers are in full swing now as the reinforcing foundations are prepared.
Year 7 Thailand trip follow up evening: Thank you to those parents and students who were able to join us for our celebration evening. It was a delight sharing some of our highlights with you. We thoroughly enjoyed our time away and were extremely proud of all your children achieved. It was a tremendously successful excursion.
Car Park Safety – Primary and Secondary Site: This is a special message to all golf cart owners who use the shared DBIS and Wei Lun school car park. This main entrance, to both of our schools, is used by over 1,200 students every day. The use of this space before the start of our respective school days is of real concern. Priority use of this parking area in the morning is for buses. It is vital that the buses have sufficient space to park and allow all passengers to disembark safely.
Could you please limit the use of this area in the morning, and if necessary use it only to drop off your child. If it is vital to park your golf cart, please use the limited areas near our school. Please don’t park your golf carts in front of or beside Wei Lun School at any time. We will be working with City Management to provide a finite number of designated golf cart parking spaces as well as a drop off / pick up zone.
Concerns have been raised recently regarding parking issues at our Kindergarten site. Some golf cart drivers are blocking the entrance and exit to the car park by parking across the entrance or close to the entrance. This is causing difficulties for pedestrians and all other vehicles. The start of our Kindergarten day is a very busy time and we want to ensure that all students can get to school safely and on time. Please use the designated parking spaces in the Kindergarten car park.
Pencil Case Project: On July 1 2011 I will be going to Ghana to start a three week ProWorld volunteer programme at Sankofa Mbofra Fie School and Orphanage, located in Eguafo, a small village outside of Cape Coast in Ghana. Eguafo is a rural farming village that struggles from poverty and lack of resources. I will provide each of our DBIS Primary classes with two empty pencil cases which, if possible, I would like the students to fill with a variety of new stationery items. I will collect these on Friday 17 June and take these pencil cases to the children of Sankofa. Thank you in anticipation of any support you may be able to offer. Dawn Hulland
Primary Art Exhibition: A further reminder that we have our annual Kindergarten and Primary Art Exhibition on Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 June, to be held once again in the Globe Theatre.
PE and Sports Information: Term 3 is a relatively quiet one for school sports, although we still have some training sessions taking place. The cricketers, Secondary footballers, and Biathlon racers have been active, as have the Beijing bound netball and rugby teams from the Primary and Secondary school. We have two more additions to the sporting timetable in two weeks time (see below). Our Primary students continue to work hard in the pool each week, while our Secondary students are working through a health and fitness unit. Please refer below for further updates. Matt Corbett - PE Coordinator.
Year 6 Cricket: Congratulations to our Year 6 cricketers who took part in the ESF qualifying competition this week. The squad battled to a hard won third place and go through to the second tier Hong Kong schools competition coming up on 4 June. The team won 3 out of 5 matches and with a little more luck could have won 4 – one match could have gone either way. One of the victories was by a huge 68 run margin. Well done to all who took part from Mr Hunt and Mr Rose. Cricket training will be on again next Wednesday from 3:15 pm where places will be up for grabs for the next tournament.
Dulwich College, Beijing, Invitational Rugby and Netball Tournament: DBIS is sending a Primary and a Secondary netball team, as well as a Year 6 rugby team to this tournament being held on 3 and 4 June. Our teams have been training hard every week and are looking forward to the enjoyment of this competition. Good luck to everyone involved in your continuing preparations. X-Country Runners and T-Ball Players Wanted!: We are looking for participants for a Year 6 and a Secondary Cross Country club as well as a T-Ball club for Years 5 and 6, during the week beginning 6 May. Further information will be shared at this week’s assembly.
Year 5 and 6 Swimming Gala, Tsing Yi Swimming Complex, Friday 17 June: A letter will be sent home this week with details for this year’s event.
Secondary PE Health & Fitness: Please note that all students will be running offsite during some of these lessons.
Secondary Netball: Last night the DBIS Secondary Beijing team had a warm up with Hong Kong Cricket Club. We had one team and played the Cricket Club’s two 12 - 16 year teams in a round robin. Our girls played six intensive matches. We had the opportunity to really focus on playing as a team and it was a brilliant practice. We had three wins, two draws and one loss. All teams were well matched. Veronica Arnold, the coach at HKCC and head of umpiring at the HKNA, chose Ashley Yetsenga, Giulia Andragetti and Kelsey Bredbury as outstanding players. Well done to all of our girls! Susanne Chambers – PE Teacher.
A warm welcome to our DBIS babies: What a line up! A very warm welcome to all of our DBIS babies – our staff have been quite busy haven’t they!
