Dear Parents
Welcome Back: Welcome back to everyone at the start of our third term. The good weather has been matched by the bright faces of our well rested students. All students are engaged with their respective studies and are set for a rewarding term ahead. Our Secondary students are all off site at present on their education beyond the classroom adventures in Thailand and north of Beijing.
We have a number of special events taking place this term including the Year 3 production of Jungle Book 2, the Kindergarten and Primary Art Exhibition, the Primary School Awards and the Secondary School Awards (separate ceremonies this year) along with our Year 6 Graduation Assembly on the last day of term, 24 June. Hong Kong Young Writers Competition: A number of our students recently entered the Hong Kong Young Writers competition – a competition open to all school students in Hong Kong. We are thrilled to announce the selection of two of our student entries for publication in this year’s anthology - “New Tales from the Silk Road”. Be sure to look out for the book in our DBIS library. Congratulations to Charlotte Cullinane and Emily Weinstein for their efforts. Both girls attended an official presentation ceremony at the City University to celebrate their success. Congratulations also go to all DBIS student entrants. Your efforts were recognised for their quality and creativity. Year 1 Production: We were treated to yet another spectacular DBIS extravaganza by our Year 1 students when they presented their multiple talents just before the Easter break with their performance of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Thank you to everyone who played their part in such an entertaining evening: from the parents who helped with the learning of songs, making of props, back drop painting, make up and costumes to the teachers, education assistants and other support staff. Thank you in particular to our students who were simply brilliant – it really was a team effort. Ian Hunt – Deputy Principal Primary Art Exhibition: A reminder to keep either of the two evenings of Wednesday 8 or Thursday 9 June set aside for our annual Kindergarten and Primary Art Exhibition, to be held once again in the Globe Theatre. More information will follow in a Special Notice. Notification of Withdrawal: A final reminder to please be sure to notify our School office of any impending student withdrawals due to occur during the coming weeks or at the end of this year. While there is a mandatory notification period in place, it is also important that we are able to notify parents on our respective waiting lists concerning confirmed placements for our next school year. We have anxious parents with children on waiting lists in place for all classes. Enrolments for Year 7 – Starting in August 2012: Our School Council has updated the priority criteria for enrolment into our Year 7 classes for the 2012 / 2013 academic year. This information will be sent out to all parents of Year 5 students next week. The key points of the new priority enrolment criteria for Year 7 classes, for August 2012 and beyond, will be shared with all parents in our next school newsletter. Mandarin Club: Our Mandarin club continues this term. For those students who have missed it in the last two terms, they are especially welcome to join us. The details are posted on our school website in the Mandarin section. Battle of the Books: Last week our Primary and Secondary Battle of the Books teams took part in the semi finals at Canadian International School and ISF Academy, following months of reading, preparation and quizzes at the BOB club. Both teams performed extremely well, playing in teams of six against other schools, being quizzed and recalling facts from 20 different books on their list. Their team work and the details that they could remember about the books were amazing. Although we didn’t make it to the finals, both teams managed to win and draw some rounds. Our students enjoyed the sense of occasion using microphones and buzzers while having an audience to appreciate their powers of recall. Well done to everybody who took part. The new book lists will be out soon, so get ready for next year’s battle! Kate Basford Kindergarten News: Welcome back to Term 3 from all of our Kindergarten Staff. We plan to fit in as many exciting learning opportunities as we can. Nursery students have had a fun start with their entry point to Sand and Water; an integrated play deck with foam, bubbles, water and the messiest activities you can think of! Reception students have been extremely messy in their own right creating canvases for Artwalk DB in the style of Jackson Pollock. It was a great display at Café Duvet last Friday. Thank you to everyone for providing alternative clothing for the week. The new Reception topic started this week so please help us out with items from the list of ‘treasures’ if you can. Jane Hendley - Head of Kindergarten. Welcome to Our New Health Coordinator: A warm welcome to our new Health Coordinator, Mirjana Lakovic. Mirjana started with us this week and joins Janet Ngan in our Primary and Secondary School First Aid room. Boardwalk Café Update: Thank you to all involved who have helped to ensure that the new meal service for Year 1 and Year 2 has started so smoothly, with much higher than anticipated numbers signed up (over 50 students). The delivery to table service has been successful and with additional staffing, we have been able to bring down the Year 3 to Year 6 students from 12:40 pm. As you are aware, the Boardwalk Café is operated under contract to Chartwells. The Café proprietors have been working hard to accommodate all Year groups at our school and they are delighted with the use of the Café by our students. Parents who still wish to sign their children up for the meal service are always welcome to call in and see Connie Kwok in the Boardwalk Café.
