Dear Parents
External Review: As you are aware, we have recently had a group of external inspectors carry out a review in areas of our school. Reviews were conducted in:
• Digital Media Communications Technologies teaching and learning;
• Kindergarten teaching and learning;
• Targeted Support teaching and learning.
The review reports have been received and confirmed by our School Council.
We are very pleased with the outcomes of all three reports and notably our success in achieving the BECTA ICT Mark Award. An executive summary of the reports will be added to our website this week.
Beijing Netball Competition: A wonderful congratulations to our two netball teams who competed in Beijing last Friday and Saturday! Despite the reality of this being our first full international school sports tournament, our girls, coaches and support crew conducted themselves as seasoned international sports tourists, representing our Discovery Bay International School community to the highest level. Everyone had a superb time and thoroughly enjoyed their experiences. Our Under 11 girls went through this very demanding tournament unbeaten and won the grand final against Dulwich Shanghai. Our Under 13 girls had two losses on Saturday – one very narrow loss – and went on from there unbeaten to win the Shield final – also against Dulwich Shanghai.
Thank you to Gill, Elaine, Fran and Kate Basford for your time and effort leading up to and at the tournament – and to our supporting crew who made it up for part or all of the tournament Thank you to all of our netball coaches - the girls in these two teams are a direct product of the work that has gone in since many of these girls started their netball with us in Year 3.
An extra special thank you Gill Hadley for your drive to organize this tournament at what is a very busy time of the school year. The organization was just superb and your leadership appreciated by everyone involved – thank you and well done!
Art Exhibition: Thank you to everyone able to make it along last Wednesday and Thursday for one of our special school community events. Our annual Art Exhibition continues to grow in every respect each year – this time was no exception. We had an wonderful array of beautifully created original art works on display – from the stunning collective works of our Kindergarten classes to the glittering individual efforts of all Year 1 to Year 8 students. And some staff magic woven in for good measure.
Thank you for taking the time to come and see our student work on display, for your special feedback and for simply allowing us the delight to work with your children. Thank you to all of our artists and their respective teachers for putting the content together. Thank you to Sam Bray and our Year 6 helpers for the delicious food. Thank you of course to Tracey Smal and to Eleanor Loran for your work in putting the Art Exhibition together.
Secondary School – Transition Days: Our Year 6 students, moving through to Year 7 next year, joined our current Year 7 and Year 8 students for a challenging and fun filled afternoon of team work and problem solving last Friday afternoon. The ‘Great Race’ was organised as part of the transition days for our 2010 / 2011 Secondary students and followed on from a most successful Secondary School ‘experience day’ on Thursday. Our students had a busy and most enjoyable time, eventually arriving at Zaks for pizza, juice and ice cream. Thank you to all of our staff involved in the work over these transition days – and in particular to John Rose for the outstanding organisation put into Friday’s event.
Bicycle Safety: Please assist our road safety practices where possible in reminding your child to ‘walk’ their bicycles in and out of our Primary / Secondary School entrance and parking area, using the footpath. The decision concerning who is allowed to ride bicycles to school is the responsibility of parents. School policy requires all students riding bicycles to and from school to wear an approved bicycle safety helmet. Thank you for your assistance with this important safety issue.
Mobile Telephones: Our school continues to be an open access facility. Helpers will call in at various times to drop lunches off or to pick up students after school. Could you please remind your helpers not to use their mobile telephone in or around school as the discussion levels interrupt class lessons?
School Awards Ceremony: Congratulation to all of our School Award recipients (Year 3 to Year 8). Our Awards Ceremony will be held on Friday 18 June. Parents of our Award recipients have been invited to attend this assembly. Consistent with previous years, all students who were nominated for our School Spirit Awards will receive a special certificate at a normal school assembly.
The full list of Award recipients will be included in our last newsletter for this year.
