Dear Parents
Be sure to read the update being sent out tomorrow on our International Food Fair.
Year 6 China Trip: A huge thank you to all of our Year 6 students who went on the Hangzhou China trip last week. They were an absolute delight to take away and were wonderful ambassadors for the school. You would have been very proud of the way they conducted themselves. They were a credit to their families and our school.
We had a lot of fun and laughs along the way while learning about the key industries in Hangzhou of pottery, silk, tea and tourism. I would also like to thank the staff who went on the trip and in particular to Hannah Dray for all of the organisation both prior to the trip and during our stay in Hongzhou. Ian Hunt – Principal Primary School
Santa’s On Strike…. (Breaking News): Our Year I students have been practising hard for their big production of ‘Santa’s On Strike’. Only 14 sleeps until 1 December when our Year 1 students will perform at 7:00 pm in the Globe.
Secondary building update: It’s quite amazing watching the daily progress. The windows and doors are now fitted, balcony railing is being installed and the classrooms are really taking shape.

Web browser changes at school: For some time now Internet Explorer has been our main Internet browser for use within our school. With the increasing range of digital resources now used within our learning and teaching programmes, we need to ensure our selected browser gives us full support by way of displaying and activating all of the resources we plan to use. Unfortunately Internet Explorer is no longer able to meet this requirement. Having reviewed other options to determine the best browser for our needs, we will be changing to use Google Chrome.
It would be helpful if you could download Google Chrome for your children to use at home as well, to ensure that the full selection of resources built into our learning activities can be accessed accordingly.
To download Google Chrome please go to: http://www.google.com/chrome?hl=en-GB
School Advisory Committee: We have confirmed our Advisory Committee for the 2011 – 2012 period. The following parent volunteers will be on our new Advisory Committee:
Richard Bryant
Don Guinea
Stephanie Molbert
Larry Nuttall
Martin Wardle
Further information regarding our AC members will be circulated in our next newsletter. On behalf of our school community, I wish to pass on my sincere thanks to all of the parents who put their names forward to assist with this group.
FOBISSEA Music Festival – Beijing: We would like to congratulate the seven students who attended the FOBISSEA Music Festival with Mr. Walker and Miss Balka in Beijing. Our students went through four days of intensive rehearsals and then took part in a stunning gala performance consisting of a hundred strong choir and an orchestra of over 150. There was also a little time for some amazing trips to The Great Wall and The Forbidden City. Our students were an absolute credit to their school and we are all very proud of them!
Carols on the Pitch – Wednesday 7 December: Our annual Christmas concert – Carols on the Pitch – will take place on Wednesday 7 December with festivities starting at 5:45 pm. The concert will feature an array of festive sing-a-longs as well as some traditional carols performed by our school choir, orchestra and recorder ensemble. Parents, students and friends are all invited to bring a blanket and picnic. Come and join us in getting this year’s yuletide festivities off to a special family start.
Uniform update: The weather will begin to cool down a little more in the coming weeks. In preparation, new stocks of cooler weather uniform items are available in our school uniform shop. Our new hooded sweatshirts are being manufactured this month. The latest update from our supplier indicates us having them available for sale in the week starting 28 November. The hooded sweatshirt will be available for Nursery to Secondary aged students. The design is the same for all years other than the addition of the school name on the back of the hooded sweatshirts for Secondary students.
Laboratory Technician Required: If you have experience working in a laboratory and would like to work with our Secondary School science teachers preparing chemicals / equipment for science lessons, please contact Mr Andy Edwards.

Under 12 Girls Football – ISSFHK 2011 Champions!: Congratulations to our Under 12 Girls Football team and their two coaches Ms Gina Boone and Ms Katie Worthington for winning the ISSFHK Under 12 Girls Football Championship. The team had a wonderful season going through all matches unbeaten. Fittingly, the toughest match came in the final against a spirited ICS team. The game went down to the wire with Christina Angus scoring in the final minutes to secure a well earned 1-0 victory.
Semi final: DBIS 5 – Discovery College 3
Final: DBIS 1 – ICS 0
HKSSF X Country Championships – 2011 C Grade Boys Team Champions!: On Tuesday morning we took a team of six male, and two female runners to the season ending HKSSF X country Championships held at the Shung Mun reservoir in the new territories. A staggering 110 C grade (U14) runners competed on a grueling 3.5 km undulating course through a bush track. The top 4 placings for each school were combined to unveil the top running teams from all schools on Lantau Island and the New Territories. It was a fantastic day for the Discovery Bay schools with Wei Lun and Discovery College performing extremely well. Our DBIS team took home the top prize of first team with placings of 4th, 9th, 18th, and 27th. Congratulations to all of our runners on a fantastic season.
