THE LEARNING OF A FOREIGN LANGUAGE IN PRIMARY SCHOOL PROVIDES VALUABLE EDUCATIONAL, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL EXPERIENCES FOR ALL OUR STUDENTS.
Students develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works and explore differences and similarities between Mandarin and English. We believe that learning another language raises awareness of the multilingual and multicultural world, promoting an international dimension to student learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and that of the geographical area they live in.
We aim for our students to gain confidence and competence in speaking Mandarin. As they learn in Mandarin, our students have opportunities to consolidate the knowledge, skills and concepts they are developing in other areas of the primary curriculum and our Discovery Units.
Mandarin lessons are interactive and engaging with students developing skills in the key elements of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Our teachers are supported by our Education Assistants, allowing for even greater differentiation and the possibility to challenge and extend our most able learners, as well as support those with specific learning needs. Students in Years 1 - 3 participate in four half hour lessons each week, progressing to three forty five minute lessons each week in Years 4, 5 and 6. These older students are separated into three pathways, depending on their progress and attainment in Mandarin, to ensure the lessons are further differentiated to meet their individual learning needs.
Our Year 6 students have the opportunity to extend their language learning even further during their residential trip to China, where they participate in activities such as shopping at the local markets and attending a local school. They may also take an external qualification in recognition of their attainment over the course of their Primary years, in preparation for the transition to Secondary.
