Secondary Curriculum Overview

DBIS Secondary School’s distinction rests in the emphasis placed upon small class sizes, a personalised approach to student learning, and the pursuit of creativity and innovation. Our teachers know their students well and individualise learning and support programmes according to the needs of each child.

The Secondary School provides a broad and balanced curriculum based on the English National Curriculum and tailored to meet the needs of international students living in Hong Kong. The curriculum and our approach to teaching and learning seek to ensure that students develop a range of essential thinking skills, important critical concepts and, crucially, an aptitude for continuous learning.

Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 have access to a range of subjects, including English, Mathematics, Languages (Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and French), Science, Humanities, Design Technology, Creative Arts, Computer Science and Physical Education.

The curriculum in Years 7 to 9 is further enriched by a programme of project-based learning. Our Discovery programme is unique to DBIS and involves students collaborating in small groups to investigate and respond to complex problems over an extended period. It offers students the chance to problem-solve and to take risks in an environment that encourages a trial-and-error approach to learning. Projects are interdisciplinary, drawing on knowledge from two or more subjects to carry out a comprehensive study in an area of interest.

In Years 10 and 11, students complete studies in a range of subjects leading to UK IGCSE examinations. These examinations are externally accredited and offer internationally recognised qualifications. Typically, students at DBIS will complete examinations in seven or eight subject areas.

An extensive range of A Level subjects is offered to students in the Sixth Form. A Levels are an internationally recognised qualification enabling students to go on to study globally.
